MILLED “PILLAR” AND “BUST” COINAGE

OF SPANISH AMERICA

These coins are popular as the first coins of the United States, for the “Spanish milled dollar” and its fractions were legal tender until 1857.  Some dates have particular significance to U.S. collectors.  Nice specimens of both types (“pillars” and “busts”) are becoming difficult to find.

Great Britain, set of half-crown, shilling and sixpence with LIMA below bust of George II, dated 1745-6, housed in a large promotional folio (blue leatherette), with certificate, the half-crown and sixpence rather nice (attractively toned AXF or so) but the shilling a bit worn (About Fine), all with clear details and damage-free, and very popular for having been made from silver taken from the Spanish by Commodore Anson off the Pacific coast of South America (which is explained in the packaging for this item).
