New Haven, Connecticut, Elm City Bank, $1, Oct. 20, 1855, serial 9228, extremely rare. Haxby-CT275C2. A very rare note in any form; a status only reinforced by Haxby stating, "Surviving Example Not Confirmed." Likewise, PMG has yet to grade an issued example of this denomination. The Elm City Bank of New Haven became the Second National Bank of New Haven in 1864; redemption of the Elm City Bank notes, in addition to usual loss or destruction, resulted in this important obsolete rarity. Washington D.C., Bullion Bank, $2, July 4, 1862, serial 1131, pp A. Haxby-DC170G22a. VF, previously mounted. USA, Virginia, Richmond, Virginia Treasury Note, $100, Aug. 13, 1861, serial 1027, pp A, extremely rare, PMG AU 55. Cr-VA-1; Jones-Littlefield VT02-06. A choice, problem-free example of the one of the finest and most difficult Virginia notes around. Only 6,150 notes were issued by the Virginia Treasury in mid-1861, all printed by the firm of Hoyer & Ludwig in Richmond (also notable for their Confederate banknote and stamp printing). By late 1863, just 83 $100s were left outstanding, the rest redeemed and destroyed. Now, 150 plus years later, less than ten are known in any grade and condition. Barranquilla, Colombia, Banco de Barranquilla, 20 pesos, 26-7-1900, series P, serial 05638, PMG Good 4 net / paper damage, tape repairs. SCWPM-S258, DP-7497. Very rare note from this issuer and in a typical condition for Colombian bills of this time period. Notes from Colombian private banks in the early 1900s traded often and were printed on sub-par paper, hence most rare types are seen with heavy circulation. PMG holder notes paper damage and tape. Still possesses colorful ink, the serial and signatures faded yet with serial number fully visible. One of just two in the PMG census, the other being a Fine 12 example. Comparable in quality to the example sold in Lyn Knight's 2015 Memphis sale for $1,416 all in. PMG #8044294-013. Colombia private bank issues of 1900 are typically encountered heavily circulated. PMG holder mentions paper damage and tape repairs as some interior splits have been repaired with paper on the reverse. Otherwise, the ink colors are still bold and the serial number, while faded, is still visible. The series O 50 pesos from this bank are scarcer than the series P 20 pesos, evident in this being the only found in the PMG census and one of the very few to appear recently. Shipwreck Paper Money: SS Andrea Doria, sunk in 1956 off Nantucket 

 

The SS Andrea Doria was an Italian luxury liner operated by the Italian Line from 1953 to 1956. During her three years of service, she had many transatlantic voyages and became popular with passengers for her luxury accommodations and quick speed. On the night of July 25, 1956, the Andrea Doria collided with the MS Stockholm, a Swedish American Line passenger liner, while travelling through heavy fog. The Stockholm's bow penetrated the Andrea Doria's starboard side, leaving a gaping hole. However, safety measures kept the Andrea Doria afloat for 11 hours, long enough for the survivors to evacuate. All together, 46 people died aboard the Andrea Doria while 6 crew members of the Stockholm were killed.

Divers descended upon the wreck just a day after its sinking to find it lying on its starboard side at a depth of about 250 feet, far too deep for recreational diving. Since then, through advances in diving equipment, technical divers are able to reach the wreck. However, heavy currents, silt clouds and the depth still make the Andrea Doria a difficult wreck to dive, earning it the nickname "the Mount Everest of wreck diving." Regardless, the allure of the ship's luxury and artifacts still on board bring divers back again and again.
